Before we moved left Manchester and took over Rigg House B&B, we actually didn’t know much about this part of Scotland at all. In all honesty, we were just instantly besotted with the house itself and signed the lease without knowing very much about the area it was in. But now, after being here for over 8 months, I can honestly say that we truly love where we now live. It has utterly amazed us regarding just how varied and interesting this whole area is – not only is it incredibly beautiful, it is also rich in history and culture. We are constantly learning new facts and tales about places all around Rigg House B&B and it is such an exciting adventure! South-west Scotland feels like an overlooked gem and we hope we can inspire more people to come and visit this beautiful part of the world.

Rigg House B&B is located in Dumfries & Galloway which is the first county in Scotland you come to when you leave England from the west. We are just a 3.5 hour drive from both Manchester and Liverpool, less than 2 hours from Edinburgh and only an hour from Glasgow making Rigg House B&B the ideal location for holidays and last minute weekend getaways for millions of people.

As you can see from the map above, Kirkconnel is situated right at the very top and is just a 10 minute drive into the next county, Ayrshire, and a 20 minute drive into Lanarkshire, giving us a whole wealth of wonderful day trip destinations close by. Drive 45 minutes south down the A76 to reach Dumfries, or head north west and you’ll arrive at the lovely seaside town of Ayr, also about 45 minutes from Rigg House B&B. In just over an hour you can get to towns in the south, such as Newton Stewart and Castle Douglas. And in between all of these places lie hundreds of incredible beauty spots, ruined castles, mills, museums, mines and so much more.

Kirkconnel is in the Upper Nithsdale part of the county, which includes the beautiful town of Sanquhar  – a place filled with history and stories (ruined castles and wonderful scenery along the way as standard), and just a 10 minute drive down the road. A 20 minute drive from the B&B up through the hills takes you to the highest village in Scotland, Wanlockhead which is a definite must-do when you visit the area. If it’s walking, cycling, golf, fishing, shooting, bird watching, gold panning, horse riding or even history, folklore, astronomy, art or poetry that you are in to, then this is definitely the place for you.

We are currently putting together a detailed booklet for our guests which includes information about all the places to visit within half an hour and places within an hour from Rigg House B&B. It is an exciting project to be working on because we now have the opportunity (or should that be ‘legitimate excuse’?) to regularly visit loads of amazing places. And because we are seeing all these places for the first time, we feel we can give an honest and fresh perspective about our experiences when we come to write the information booklet, which will be perfect for first-time visitors to the area.

I’ll be writing a blog post on each of the locations we want to include in our booklet, beginning with the places closest to the B&B – next time I’ll write about a couple of the beautiful little walks and adventures you can have right from the doorstep. This is a truly beautiful area and we see it as an honour to be able to share it with as many people as possible.

Book your stay at Rigg House B&B today and start planning your Dumfries & Galloway adventures – keep an eye on this blog as we continue to share stories and photos of all the amazing places to visit when you come to stay with us!
