So here we are.  Has it really been just one year since our Scottish Dream began?  I remember when people said we were mad or brave (or a bit of both) to abandon our lives in Manchester and start all over again in Scotland, but we knew with absolute certainty that we were making the right decision.  City life, and all the stress that came with it, was not making us happy and the call of the wilderness was too strong to ignore.  I also remember people saying that it would take a while to adjust to our new very different lifestyle but, as it turned out, they were wrong.  In reality it took no time at all for Rigg House to feel like home – perhaps because had I dreamt of it for so long.

The seeds for Our Scottish Dream were first sewn within hours of returning from a much-needed holiday in the Highlands, back in the Summer of 2016.  It was then when we began trawling through Rightmove and Zoopla in the desperate hope of just finding something – anything – which would offer us a fresh opportunity.  At the time we were living in a house which I sort of affectionally termed a ‘glorified squat’ – which in hindsight was a place hugely unsuitable for young children (or even adults for that matter, especially if you’re not much of a fan of asbestos).  And as well as living in sub-standard accommodation, we had a shop which meant that we worked All Of The Time and our happy days were so few and far between.  It was, in short, a pretty crappy way to live.

Despite setting ourselves a two-year plan to leave, in the end it took us just 10 months of daily internet searching until we found The One, and on this day 1 year ago we moved into Rigg House.  It has been an incredibly exciting first 12 months, in part because we now live in a freakin’ mansion!  But the fact that the house came with an established business in the form of a thriving Bed and Breakfast made it even more of an incredible opportunity.  And the most important thing for me is that I know we will never take for granted what we now have – I truly believe that we had to endure those difficult years, living in a place we weren’t suited to, in order for this dream to become reality.

We’d like to say a HUGE thank you to all the guests who have stayed with us over the last year as we have been getting to grips with running this new business.  We’ve had a lot to learn in a short space of time but it is so much fun and such a satisfying industry to work in. In an exciting surprise last week, we found out that Rigg House B&B has been shortlisted in the eviivo awards for best Scottish Hidden Gem!  This has given us a huge boost – especially since we received no recognition for the work we did in our ‘old life’ (except perhaps ‘Best Shop to Target’ at the annual Manchester Shoplifter awards, if such a thing existed!).

So, in summary, this past year has been amazing and we feel so excited by the future now.  Here’s to many more years at Rigg House B&B and many more years of sharing it with wonderful people from all over the world.  Please come and share your stories!
